talk_to_usWho contacts the Samaritans?

There may be a perception that only people on the very brink contact the Samaritans.

This is not the case.About 12% of those who contact us are thinking about suicide, have tried it or are actively doing it there and then. The vast majority – 88% of all callers – are people who are very distressed or worried, depressed or in a crisis situation, but not suicidal.

Most calls are about how a person is seen by their family, or about bullying in the workplace or about day-to-day events that are getting a person down.

Callers are divided roughly 50/50 among women and men, with slightly more men making the call. There are about 38,000 ‘contacts’, or calls, to the Cork branch every year. Of those, about 20,000 actually speak, with the rest hanging up. Calls last anywhere from five minutes to an hour and a half.
